
Richard Carter was born and raised in New Jersey. He became enamored of painting by visiting the new York City Museums with his older brother who was a graduate of the School of Visual Arts. He started painting while at Villanova University where he graduated in 1968. He and wife Claudette moved to Aspen CO in 1971 where he built a studio in an old barn in the west end. He began working as painting assistant to Bauhaus Master Herbert Bayer in 1972 and spent the next 6 years working on Bayer projects including Painting, print making, Tapestry design, architectural models, Interior design and exhibition design. All the while he was working on his own series’ of paintings and having exhibits around the US. At around this time Carter became involved in non-profit projects in Aspen. He was the primary founder and board member of what is now the Aspen Art Museum. Stints on the boards of the Aspen Foundation for the Arts, Aspen Community School, The Anderson Ranch, The ArtBase and currently The Arts Campus at Willits have demonstrated his commitment to improving the Cultural climate for the community in the Roaring Fork Valley. He has also done occasional production design on film projects around the world for the past three decades and until recently maintained a second home and studio in Santa Monica CA.
His paintings and drawings have been exhibited and are in the collections of the major art museums in Colorado and corporate and individual collections nationwide . He has had innumerable one person and group exhibitions in museums and galleries around the country and maintains a robust exhibition schedule. He currently maintains a home and a separate studio on the Roaring Fork river in Basalt CO.
He is represented by The Hexton Gallery in Aspen Co.
